How Many Sessions of Postpartum Massage Are Recommended?
In order to get the full benefits of postpartum massage, it is recommended to have 12 weekly sessions. However, your time schedule and budget are considerations in making this decision.
What Techniques Are Used?
Each session is customized to your needs. It can include a variety of techniques including Swedish relaxation, manual lymphatic drainage, Maya abdominal Dolphin MPS and Mercier Therapy. Some women prefer a light touch while others opt for a deeper massage that reaches further into the muscles and soft tissues of the body for more complete relaxation.
What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage Postpartum?
Manual lymphatic drainage is a gentle massage which encourages the flow and release of lymphatic fluid. It is the ideal type of therapeutic massage which assists the body’s natural detoxification process. This type of massage is perfect for the postpartum mother who could use some relaxation. It aims to flush away excess fluids (including those received via IV during labor or delivery) and rebalance hormones, getting the body into a healing mode and reducing downtime post-pregnancy.
Does Massage Help Postpartum Swelling?
Yes. The American Pregnancy Association recommends postpartum massage for relaxation, pain relief, and reduced swelling.
Is Postpartum Massage Safe after a C-Section?
Yes. We recommend waiting until the incision is healed and any scabs have fallen away for manual, hands-on therapy. However, we also can offer treatment with the Dolphin MPS units to minimize scar formation as soon as you are comfortable travelling. The Dolphin units utilize milli-amperage of DC current to improve blood flow and increase healing to the incision area. This is a painless, non-invasive technique which has proven very successful. Once your incision is healed, we can add in manual therapy to help return your uterus to its normal size and position and address any other issues you’re facing.
